So today was my LAST class at the Groundlings, the basic level, it was a scary day, as it was our last chance to perform, and to show how far we’ve gotten. I wouldn’t have been so nervous, if it weren’t for the stakes in play. Basically, if I pass, I will come back and enter intermediate, and see all my friends again, maybe get a place with my Junehouse people somewhere else in Hollywood, and see what happens with my career etc. If NOT, I’ve been thinking of working with theatre somewhere else.
So it started with a good old warm up, and then we were all called up to do two scenes each with two different partners each time, and… GOD, I was nervous. One of the first things Liz said was, this is not a test, and I thought ” Oh great, this is a test.” I knew it wouldn’t determine anything, but I knew that I was on the brink, and it could convince her either way. The first thing I did with Mar, and it was a weird Mother-daughter scene, where I chose a weird fancy alcoholised stepmom, trying to force a neon pink leopard print dress on her, and the second scene I did with Casey, where we went camping, and he proposed to me with a wooden ring with power-rangers carved into it. It was SO much fun, and I did alright, people laughed, and Andy told me I was on point. So I felt good, but not convinced.
After everyone had done their scenes, we had our conferences and people went in and out to the foyer, one by one, we were eating snacks and fucking around, and back into the classroom where Liz was sitting. So I went in, had a great conversation with her, we were both on the same page, and after talking and agreeing, I PASSED! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY! Holy SHIT, I passed…. THis is CRAZY.
I know what I have to do, I’m gonna keep going when I go home, I gotta do a lot of improvisation, work on the things I’ve learned, to research and observation, and keep working on the things I KNOW, that I haven’t pinned down yet, and get to a place where I feel READY, to go to intermediate.
So this means…. I haven’t seen the last of Hollywood, I haven’t seen the last of my friends here, I haven’t seen the last of Groundlings.
